When remodeling, it’s tempting to think only of the opportunities for bringing beauty into your home. But remodeling also offers the opportunity for incorporating functionality, efficiency, and organization. Consider these questions to make the most of your next home improvement project.
How do you use this space?

Think about your routines and schedules. How are you currently using the space? How does it work for you and how is it lacking? Does the layout provide enough space for everyone who needs to use it? Do you have designated areas for each task required? This question addresses layout and can help you be more practical in your planning.
Do you have enough storage?
Does each person using the space have substantial and dedicated storage? Is the storage conveniently located for each person’s needs. Storage should be close to where prep for its contents is happening. For instance, homework files should be located near the homework desk. They should also be situated in an area easy for kids to access themselves. Similarly, dangerous utensils, cleaning supplies, or weapons should be out of reach of children.
Is your family changing soon?
Are you planning on having children, sending children to college, or welcoming a parent into your home? These changes can have big implications on how you set up your new space. For instance, if adding small children you should be cognizant of what items any low storage contains and if there is enough child-accessible storage for toys.

If your kids are off to college, you may be freeing up a bedroom soon. How will that space be repurposed?
If you are welcoming an elderly parent, what needs will they have? Is your space prepared for aging in place?
